What kind of work is it?

Fihi ma fih is a prose compilation of Rumi’s discourses. Unlike the verse Masnavi, it lets readers follow conversations, questions and explanations. Alongside Sufi subjects, it includes material connected with the society around him.

Begin with one section

Choose a short section. Note the question being answered, what the examples explain and how a concept develops within the section. This is an editorial reading suggestion. Avoid separating one sentence from the rest of the discussion.

Working with a translation

Distinguish the translator’s notes from the main text. Keep a list of unfamiliar terms rather than relying only on their present-day meanings. Cite the section and page in your edition: the same page number in another translation may refer to a different passage.
