A journey through six books

The Masnavi is a Persian work in six books. Husamuddin Chalabi played an important role in its creation and recording. Scholars disagree about the starting date, so the uncertainty should be stated rather than presenting one year as certain.

Read around the story

After finishing a story, return to the preceding and following verses. The narrator’s intervening explanations reveal the question being considered. Verse numbering may vary by edition: record the book, verses, translator and publication details together.

Keep a reading notebook

Try three brief notes for each reading: What happened? Which concept did I not understand? Which passage supports my interpretation? These are editorial study suggestions, not quotations from Rumi. Compare an annotated commentary when a translation is difficult.
